Why doesn't Netflix remember movies I've seen?

I rate every movie I watch. I watch a ton of movies) Then Netflix will recommend a movie. I'll click on it and think, "Hey, this looks familiar." I'll start watching it and then realize I've seen it before. But a thumbs up or down doesn't appear. (Don't get me started on that stupid system.) What gives?

If you do a search online you can find a huge list of Netflix categories. Some were gone by the time I tried them in the Search page. But there are tons. Here's one page with lists...
https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/the-netflix-id-bible-every-category-on-netflix/

It has the name and a numeric code for each genres. I haven't figured out how to use the numeric codes. It didn't work for me. But I searched by name even though it's a little tedious using a remote But it worked when the genre/category still exists.

You can also just start with their Search engine and try any category that's your favorite.

Hope this helps!

You can also access your accounts from here and ad to your watchlists. Also includes ratings from IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, and others.

It's not perfect, you come across an occasional glitch, but it's just handier than a pocket on a shirt.

so I type Tom Hanks in the search bar and all sorts of random films come up - none with him!

It used to work better.

of a series. Or we don't know how to do it. Real pain.."think we saw ep 6, start watching, already seen, try ep 7", repeat

That's what I hated about HBO, it doesn't remember which episode you're on like Netflix does.

I have the issue with the movies I've already seen and rated being recommended again. I watch Netflix through Apple TV, and do all my rating through that. My guess is that Netflix doesn't pick up the Apple TV ratings. I got so sick of seeing the same shows in my recommended list that I finally went to my laptop and gave the "thumbs down" to a bunch of movies and genres I don't like. Seems to have worked.
