This is the story of an American soldier (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and his interpreter in Afghanistan. When the soldier is mortally wounded, his interpreter shelters him and moves him toward the base until they are rescued by American forces. After his recovery the soldier returns to Afghanistan to get his friend out of the country and away from the Taliban.

This is based on a true story. Its very moving.

1. It sounds wonderful

but I find myself worrying that the interpreter doesn't make it. Can you spoil it for me and tell me if he will? Kidding/not kidding. I don't think I'd be able to watch Lassie, Come Home without risking a cardiac event.

Yes, he is rescued. The story of the interpreter rescuing the American is known so widely that the Taliban wants to kill him. So he is forced to go into hiding. (The Afghan interpreters were supposed to be given passports to get out of the country as payment for serving.)

In the last scene the American soldier and the interpreter (and his wife) are on a cargo plane to the US.

4. Takeaway

It really comes home, the actual war that our soldiers had to fight for 20 years!! How horrendous.

Also - why can't the US honor its commitments? I wonder how many got the visas they were told they would get. Looks like none because it was a herculean effort to get even one.

This movie left me angry with the US command.
