Netflix Has Created A Self-Fulfilling Cancelation Loop With Its New Shows

A couple weeks ago, I remarked that Netflix now felt like it was “actively stealing time from me.” I can almost not even remember which cancelation I was talking about at the time, given that there have been so many, but I believe it was 1899, the new show from the creators of Dark, which like Dark, was set up as part of 3-season arc.

Naturally, it was cancelled on a cliffhanger after a single season because it didn’t attract enough viewership or have enough people finish all the episodes in some arbitrary stretch of time.

But what’s happened now is that this has happened so often with so many shows, that Netflix has created a self-fulfilling loop with many series that probably could have gone on to become valuable catalogue additions otherwise.

The idea is that since you know that Netflix cancels so many shows after one or two seasons, ending them on cliffhangers and leaving their storylines unfinished, it’s almost not worth investing in a show until it’s already ended, and you know it’s going to have a coherent ending and finished arc.

1. I don't rush to watch new shows anymore for that reason. Not just Netflix doing it,

either.

But, yes, it is unfortunately a self-fulfilling prophecy. Cancel early on a cliffhanger, destroy trust, audiences will no longer take a chance, and pretty soon all you have is old crap that causes viewers (and critics) to move on to other outlets. Apple + is seemingly doing that more and more too-- most recently with Charlie Hunnam's (Sons of Anarchy) adaptation of Shantaram. It deserved better.

I've only watched shows that have been around for a while, but I've been considering watching some newer ongoing series. Now I'm sure not going to watch anything that has not already been completed.

3. i recently subscribed to Acorn cuz I love British TV..and they have the BEST shows on

...tv. I love all their programs. Some are even from the 70s. I am happily staying away from ALL news cept our local weather.

I love British TV also. I've just discovered "The Darling Buds of May", a series from the 60's I believe? They also have some amazing crime series and I love just about anything Masterpiece Theater.

Check how many seasons before beginning.

Now, knowing 1899 is canceled, I won't be watching it. I can only imagine if "Dark" had only the first season....
