Gynecologists, patients focus on making procedures less painful

August 25, 2024 2:29 AM
By Associated Press

Federal officials affirmed this month that the pain people might feel when getting an IUD can be more than doctors' promises of "just a pinch."

The local anesthetic lidocaine "might be useful for reducing patient pain" when inserting intrauterine devices, according to new guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which also encourages doctors to have a conversation with patients about pain management.

Women have used social media to advocate for more pain-management options, even recording and posting videos to document their grimaces, screams and tears as IUDs are put in. But complaints of pain are not limited to the small, long-lasting birth control device.

Many relatively quick outpatient procedures can cause pain, including biopsies and examinations of the uterus and cervix. Gynecologists and patients say there need to be more conversations about options for local anesthetics — as well as other pain-relief options for these procedures.

All done in office and told take Tylenol an hour before procedure for pain - nothing else. All definitely more than a pinch of pain, especially when they used a tenaculum to grab my cervix and pull everything straight to get their tools in. There was no reason I could see for not using additional numbing or twilight other than time. My infertility doc used twilight for in office egg retrievals and that worked great.

4. I had the opposite from my (last ever) male gynecologist. He said, with hostility, "I told you it would hurt."

about this issue. Men are drugged for everything and women are told their cervix does not have nerve endings and are literally taught in medical school. Doctors are telling women and girls to buck up and quit being babies as they are withering in pain, passing out and vomiting. And it is a number of MEN doctors getting out on social media and a particular anesthesiologist for the last year having post after post about this. Not that they would listen to women. And FINALLY they are starting to offer some simple solutions to address the pain before these procedures.

When I was learning about this (extremely healthy and no IUDs in my time) I was flabbergasted and disgusted. It is literally sick. But I am hearing ore addressing and more women demanding.

...it doesn't hurt and even if it does... oh well. The indifference to women's pain is at least partially rooted in misogyny and patriarchy that devalues women, their bodies, their lives and their pain.

It's misogynist bullshit right from the get-go that men and societies use to justify the abuse (sexual and otherwise) of women and to privilege men who get off scot-free when they do it.

hurt. I saw a new gynecologist (a woman) and she also biopsied it, and wanted to see if it could be removed. She tried, it couldn't. The pain was unbearable and she couldn't get a hoop around the damned thing. I even had uterine cramps, something I haven't had in years! She wants to see me again to discuss further treatment, but I'm refusing to do anything without proper pain management.
