Breast cancer is very treatable when caught early, and mammograms, which are X-ray images of breasts, are a reliable screening test to detect it. Now, final guidelines released Tuesday from the U.S. Preventive Services Taskforce urge all women to get screened every other year, starting at age 40.

The new recommendation applies to all people assigned female at birth who are at average risk of breast cancer. The recommendation is based on a review of new evidence by an independent panel of experts at the task force. Until now, women in their 40s have been encouraged to have a conversation with their health care provider about when to start mammograms based on their personal risks...

Colorectal cancer is rising in young people. A growing body of evidence suggests diet and lifestyle play a role in the uptick. If you think you're too young to get colorectal cancer, consider this: About 20,000 people in the U.S. under the age of 50 will be diagnosed this year. And an estimated 3,750 young adults will die.

"Colorectal cancer is rapidly shifting to diagnosis at a younger age," conclude the authors of an American Cancer Society report released this month. Since the mid-'90s, cases among people under 50 have increased by about 50%. It's one of the deadliest cancers in this age group.

"The moment that I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer scared me out of my mind," says Shawna Brown, a union organizer in Stockton, Calif. She was in her late 40s at the time and was completely shocked. "I had no signs or symptoms," she says...

months ago had some breast tenderness. Went for a mammo. All OK, thank the gods. Gal said the majority of women coming in for mammos do so because of pain. I was surprised. I am 76.
