As I write this article, I have a cold.
At some point in the past couple of weeks, I managed to inhale a droplet of water suspended in the air that contained hundreds or thousands of copies of a virus (probably a rhinovirus, the kind that causes most common colds). That virus infected my throat and my sinuses, resulting in the sore throat and stuffed-up nose I have right now.
As inconveniences go, this feels rather minor. I think of my friends with small children, who are constantly careening between RSV and the flu and god knows what other infection their kids picked up in day care and brought back home. I think of my family in assisted living facilities, who sometimes find themselves confined to their rooms, unable to see their friends or interact with the outside world, when theres a respiratory virus going around. I think of the roughly 1.3 million people a year who die of tuberculosis, a respiratory bacterium that we have yet to defeat. And, of course, I think of the 7 million or so people worldwide killed over the past four years by a respiratory virus spread this exact same way: Covid-19.
At least as long as human beings have lived in large, close groups, respiratory viruses have been present sometimes an annoyance, sometimes a catastrophe. Though weve managed to create vaccines and drugs to blunt their effects, the viruses endure.
But there is a group of people who think we do not need to live this way. These scientists, activists, and entrepreneurs believe were going to look back on this era, one of commonly endured airborne infections, as a case of antiquarian barbarism, a bunch of needless suffering that we accepted because we didnt know any better. They believe that we have the technology now, and will have even better technology soon, that could end respiratory infections for good, the way that disinfecting our drinking water with chlorine helped end typhoid as a major cause of death in the US.
The technology is called germicidal ultraviolet light (GUV), and in particular, a relatively novel kind of ultraviolet light often denoted as far-UV. We have so much data suggesting that this is far and away the most impactful technology, when it comes to protecting people from infectious disease, that exists today, says Kevin Esvelt, a professor and biologist at MIT who has championed the idea.

(25,257 posts)and every day I clean the head piece, nasal piece, air hose, water container, filter, with ultraviolet light.
The machine can also be used to "clean" everyday items like credit cards, cell phone, whatever. I had a different kind of cleaning machine but I switched to ultraviolet 2 years ago and love it.
Oh yeah, I follow college wrestling and at the national tournament they use 8 mats at once. In between matches they run a "gizmo" across the mat that uses ultraviolet.

(17,436 posts)Well, not deadly in the sense it will kill you in minutes, but it has a very high correlation with causing skin cancer and eye disease.
You don't want to be exposed to it.
Luckily there are devices that contain the light and pass air through it. They are expensive though.

(5,655 posts)When a patient is discharged the machine in brought in to sterilize the room.
However, hospitals have limited equipment & cant do every room.
There is a company that makes industrial lighting that emits the proper frequencies. These lights can suck air in and sterilize it before sending it back into the atmosphere- The plan is to use such lighting in schools, airports etc.

Just for sanitizing small stuff.

(4,589 posts)Long wave ultraviolet aka black light is safe but ineffective against viruses
Short wave ultraviolet light is effective but can damage your eyes.
Having everyone using short ultraviolet is not smart. You either use filtering through having it expose objects in a closed container or by passing air past it where you can't see the light directly as people have mentioned. Using direct ultraviolet light should be left to trained people wearing protective eye gear to filter out the rays and know not to make it directly shine on them.
