6. My father had prostate cancer back in 1982. They set him up for 34

radiation treatments he made it through 28 before he got so sick he couldn't take any more. He ended getting a colostomy
and suffered for several years from his treatments before passing. So that has always worried me.

10. Cancer screenings and treatments have come a long way

…just since my cancer diagnosis in 2010. There are lots more tools in the oncology toolkit and good doctors listen to their patients concerns. You are also your own person and will respond to treatment in your own way, so never compare your outcome to someone else’s.

But most importantly, don’t jump to conclusions. Go through the diagnostics and get second/third/fourth opinions on treatment if you’re not comfortable with what you hear. NCI-designated Comprehensive Care Centers have all the latest treatments & clinical trials. Teaching hospitals are also very good.

Lots of research and some changing theories on treating very, very early stage breast & prostate cancers, like maybe we’ve been over treating it with surgery when close monitoring would be more appropriate?

8. The VA did a check on me after my PSA jumped and of 12 samples,

one showed cancer. A couple of years later, another found 0 of 12 and the same the next time.

My PSA dropped and when it went up again, they gave me finasteride and it went down. You are most likely to die of something else because most prostate cancer grows so slowly. For me, it's been 15 years and I'm days away from 77. I'm glad I refused to do anything about it. Even my urologist says wait now. Chances are very high that you are worrying unnecessarily and treatment today has much reduced risk of problems.

9. I had my MRI just before Christmas...

Currently, I'm one of the lucky ones deemed no clinical cancer present. But I did discover I have BPH and maybe a bougt or prostatitis which triggered my urology workup. I've been worried for the past two years watching two former coworkers pass from this heinous disease.

Got the surgery to remove it and the cancer hadn’t spread. No sign of cancer four years later and he remained continent even without the prostate. So try not to worry too much (I know, easier said than done!).

19. This summer I was diagnosed with prostate cancer

I am 62 yo.

I remember well the biopsies that were collected through a small incision just inside the anus. It left a dull throbbing pain in the grion that lasted several days.

I wish you luck with the choices you will have to make if your biopsies are positive. I will be estatic for you if the biopsies are negative.

MEN have your PSA checked regularly....1 in 5 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

20. Thank you all for you encouraging words. I have several friends that have survived

prostate cancer and are doing fine. I have the so-called Medicare Advantage; the doctor had to file
twice to get the MRI approved by the insurance.
