(5,199 posts)Dislike the water pills, for their effect, but legs & feet swell up without them, plus effect on chest fluids & heart.
So I take them and am still ambulating at advanced age.
The alternative - not so appealing...

(3,805 posts)1 30mg bp pill generic name starts with N in morning
1 90 mg same N pill (at night)
1 water pill at night (helps with ankle swelling).
It works pretty well.
Keep experimenting with different meds. There are several, and they can work in combination. It takes a while to get the right combo.
In the meantime, try simple ways to reduce your bp in the moment. Like take six long, slow belly breaths, then rest for a minute, and take your bp again. This gets mine down 10 points quick.
Tai chi and yoga help too. There are youtube videos that take you through some easy yoga positions that will calm your bp.
Neither of these will work the miracles the right med combo will, but they have an immediate and probably (done everyday) a long-term effect.
I pee a lot. Up at 3am every night. Salt control is directly related to how often and how much I pee. I avoid processed foods and doctor says I'm doing good.
PS: Doctor has me eating lots of bananas. With peeing I get rid of lots of potassium. A good natural way to stay on top of things.
PSS: I watch less news. Blood pressure immediately got under control.

(12,221 posts)Ive been on varying doses of the same 2 meds for at least 6 yrs. Currently Lisinopril 40 mg daily and Amlodipine 5 mg daily. Dont know if either of those are considered water pills, but doc says they want me to stay on Lisinopril because it supposedly helps protect the kidneys if youre diabetic.
After I bumped up my exercise to 180+ min/wk (after about 2 months) the amlodipine was lowered from 10mg to 5mg because I was getting some really low readings after exercise (like 79/56).
Yesterdays readings were 103/78 (am drs appt), 125/78 (afternoon before exercise), and 114/60 (after exercise).
Healthy thoughts being sent your way!

(52,891 posts)Valsartin and a Co-Q 10 supplement seem to do the trick. The Co-Q 10 is expensive, though, and out of pocket.
There was a problem with the manufacture of Valsartin a few years ago and I had to try others. I just didn't like them. This one has no side effects for me whatsoever.
I hate needing a prescription. But the alternative was worse.
Also, I didn't realize how bad I felt while the pressure was uncontrolled. But as it came under control, I realized how bad I had been feeling, how fuzzy my thinking and how uncomfortable my head and body were, before I got it controlled.
Good luck to you. I hope you notice the same huge improvement I did.
