American Red Cross declares national blood crisis

COLUMBIA — The American Red Cross declared its first-ever National blood crisis.

“Donate, please if you’re healthy and eligible, please make an appointment," said Joe Zydlo, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross of Missouri-Arkansas.

Zydlo, who is entering his sixth year with the Red Cross, said he has never heard language such as "blood crisis" before this week.

“This is the worst shortage, blood crisis that we’ve faced in more than a decade. When you have a dangerously low supply at this level right now that we’re at, it poses risks and concerns for patient care, for doctors," he said. "It’s forcing them to make those difficult decisions. Who’s going to receive the blood transfusion? Who’s going to need to wait for more products when they become available."
