Brown University scientists create breath test for detecting COVID-19

PROVIDENCE — Researchers from Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital have developed a breath test to detect COVID-19.

The device, dubbed the Bubbler, detects viral RNA and converts it to DNA, where it can be measured using a PCR instrument.

The Bubbler can also barcode that DNA, allowing a sample to be linked directly to the patient it came from and to be used for sequencing.

In a new study in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, the lead investigator, William G. Fairbrother, a professor in Brown’s Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry, said, “The Bubbler is more likely to be a better indicator of current infection than (nasal) swabs."

A good read.

Brown is an excellent University, in our sister state. This could help now and in the future.

and get quick results. I know this is coming down the pike at some point.

but this is very cool. If a clinical trial pops up for it, I'm in.
