The American Psychological Association in 2018 published its first-ever psychological practice guidelines for boys and men. The guidelines look at how concepts of masculinity and the socialization of men may be contributing to higher rates of suicide, depression, health issues and violence in male populations. Christopher Booker reports on efforts to disrupt this culture in some unexpected places.

The culture itself is in various forms of crisis. All the particulars and news de jour obscure that.

When we address the issues with boys and young men by first studying the current context of masculinity, (rather than just making broad brush remarks and judgements) we might begin to stem the tide of violence that is erupting from that aspect of the culture.

In fact, if we could combine some insights into that with gun control laws that are sensible and effective, that two-pronged approach could save many lives and protect many families from tragedy and it is important for that reason.
