Really eye opening the lack of a discussion in this country around the harmful effects of sugar. The Agricultural Lobby ha been successful in getting Americans addicted to sugar which leads to unnecessary and harmful storage of fat.
Ever notice how next to sugar on any food label, it just says the grams of sugar and not the % that represents of the daily recommended amount? This is a successful lobbying effort that knows that if consumers saw the facts they'd change their eating habits which would effect profits.
Imagine if 25% were next to sugar on your coffee creamer, or 260% were on you bottle of soda? Or how about if 150% was next to sugar on your child's breakfast cereal?
Sugar is highly addictive and tricks the body into storing fat and being hungry. We have a country that is strung out on sugar and a lobby doing everything in their power to prevent the public from knowing about it. There is no major movement I've found to help educate the country about sugar, why?

Oh yes nutritious foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are naturally low in fat.
However, a lot of low-fat food products /substitutes pushed as healthy choices often contain a lot of sugar and other unhealthy ingredients
Its not just the high consumption of sugar but the image pushed that its a healthier choice in many cases too

(14,118 posts)I've been on a low glycemic/sugar diet for some years. My pre-diabetes diagnosis hasn't progressed and I'm happy with that. However, I observe people at the market buying candy, glazed donuts, ice cream and other sugar-heavy products. So I accept that for some reason I can't tolerate sugar the way they can.
I'm happy with the dietary guidelines listed on the foods I purchase here in New Mexico. All the information is helpful and I consider myself to be responsible for knowing how much of what is healthy.
We all have to do our part in knowing that and not depend on government agents to follow us around the stores telling us what to buy. Disclaimer: when I celebrate a family birthday I'll eat some cake and ice cream. So far so good.

I for one really appreciate added information on restaurant menus and it definitely regularly effects my choices.
Fed Up is an excellent documentary on Prime right now. Quite sad though, so many people are addicted to sugar and don't even know that's why they are obese. You have millions of people addicted to sugar just as surely as someone is addicted to heroin and there is absolutely no escape from it for them, sugar is everywhere. The sugar is damaging their body and tricking it into storing fat and they live in a society that shames them for their addiction.
Sugar addiction is the biggest health challenge of our time.

(14,238 posts)Everything you eat is converted to sugar in your body so it can be used for energy.
What is being talked about in this post is refined sugar; it is added to food and is indeed very harmful in large quantities.
