Free To Be . . . You And Me

I just bought the book and CD for my daughters. I remember loving FTBYAM (I will use an acronym due to length ) when it came out when I was a little girl.

I still love it, but it is dated. And I was disappointed when listenting to William's Doll again, that the message isn't so much that William can play with whatever he wants to, but that it's OK for William to play with a doll because it doesn't mean he isn't heterosexual as boys grow up to be daddies with babies to take care of, so it is a perfectly good toy for a hetero boy. I didn't remember it that way when I was a kid but that definitely seems to be the message.

And my favorite song, "When I Grow Up," is all about whether SHE will be pretty and whether HE will be strong.

Has anyone seen/heard it lately, and how does it compare to your memories?

(I wonder whether this is the right group, but FTBYAM seems mainly like a feminist thing.)

I loved it as a kid too. Some of them are a little dated, but are probably still a great starting point. It would be cool if they did an updated version.

a copy for her new daughter. I actually did not like the song about how everyone hates housework.
