Why diversity in discussions of feminism: My take

So a few comments here and in other places have been made about why intersectionality/diversity is ONLY an issue with feminists/women and not with other oppressed groups and i did sorta want to address that.

Firstly, it's not true. Diversity issues in real life are OFTEN discussed within the LGBT community. People of color within this community have many groups dedicated to addressing racism, homophobia & transphobia in society and racism specifically in the LGBT community. I have worked/volunteered and had leadership roles in these groups. So it is not an issue specific to feminists.

However DU is not a broader community. It's much smaller. There may some day be an LGBT POC group within DU, but for now, there are very few POC du'ers who post in the LGBT group (chovexani and i being the two that post most often). Hence there hasn't been a real need for it. If i want to talk about race within the LGBT community, I feel like I can in the current LGBT group.

Secondly, there are way more feminists identified queer women (lesbians, bisexuals and transwomen) hence the need for including diversity within conversations of feminists is a more pressing issue on DU.

Women are 51% of the population, hence diversity within women is much larger in numbers than in smaller groups.

It's not that I believe feminism is less needed and has to be "diluted" with diversity concerns. It's more than feminism in my opinion cannot exists unless it accounts for all feminists. Without addressing race/class/sexual orientation and gender expression within feminism and feminists theories, feminism is incomplete.

2. I view the LGBT community as a model when it comes to diversity

Diversity completes the Feminist movement. I'm not interested in promoting equality for educated women to get to the top of the food chain and join the oppressors. Equality has to be for all women, which means for all people otherwise it's not equality you're after but domination.

i dont think the lgbt community is a model either but i do think there are many more groups organized to represent marginalized identities within the lgbt community
