I cannot be in a relationship with a man, Jane Fonda

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-6882371/Jane-Fonda-83-says-Ive-lot-cancer-talks-battle.html

The three-times married Barbarella star also told the publication how she has sworn off relationships for life because she 'gives up herself'. 'I cannot be in a relationship with a man', Jane said. 'I had several serious relationships after Ted, but I can’t…' 'That is my failing. I realise I can never overcome it. That when I’m with a man, I give up myself.' And at the age of 83, Jane feels like she has become the best version of herself after spending up to her seventies living life like a 'double image'. 'I had a gender prejudice, my mother killed herself, so I saw women as kind of being on the losing side,' she confessed. 'I was so conditioned to identify with men in every possible way. 'When I was married to Roger Vadim, one day one of his friends said, "God, Jane, you’re just like us" – and I took it as a compliment. 'For the bulk of my life, I would say up until my seventies, I spent my life like a double image, like a double exposure. As an adolescent, in order to fit in, I made sure no one – especially boys or men – could see who I really was; that I could get really angry, that I could not be pretty, that I could be tough. 'I went through life not whole. And when I left Ted, I could feel myself moving back into myself. That is the main thing about the third act as I’m living it. I am no longer a double image. 'I am both things now together.'

(I wonder why she couldn't find a man who she could be 100% herself around. Did she have to have "superstars"? I think giving up on men at age 70 is not really a big deal. Why did she have to spend her whole life denying herself. I really enjoyed her autobiography, but it is awful to read about how when she had her first daughter, she could not stand her daughter's gaze because she wanted to hide her true self and her daughter looked right through her.)
