Rosario Marciano plays Piano Works by Women Composers

Rosario Marciano (1944-1998) was a musician who combined performance, scholarship and teaching. She gave her first recital (a solo concert) at the age of six and her first concerto with orchestra at nine. Having completed her studies in Venezuela, she went to Austria where she continued under the guidance of distinguished instructors. She won the 1964 Salzburg Piano Competition (1st prize) and the 1967 Mannheimer Tage as well.She pioneered the recording on historic pianos (fortepianos), with a recital of Schubert music in the early 70's. Her extensive discography includes recordings of rarely heard works by women composers (like this one). She also very distinguishly championed the piano music from her fellow Venezuelans, and recorded a number of anthologies. She had an extensive collection of historical instrument, which nowadays are a museum in her native Caracas, the "MUSEO DEL TECLADO", founded by her. She wrote a biography of the greatest Venezuelan pianist, Teresa Carreno, and edited modern editions of her music. She was awarded the Theodore Korner Pirze for her scholarship on women composers. She is commemorated by the RosarioMarciano Prize, awarded by the Vienna International Pianists Assoc., in cooperation with the VenKultur, the Venezuelan Culture Association in Asutria.
