These vintage photos of Julia Child in the kitchen will inspire you to cook
Zoë Miller
Julia Child (1912 to 2004) introduced French cooking to Americans through her famous cookbook and the subsequent TV series that evolved from her recipes. At a time when quick (often canned) meals were the norm, Child helped transform America's culinary landscape.
In honor of her birthday, which falls on August 15th, INSIDER rounded up images of Child doing what she did best cooking. Special thanks goes to the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at Harvard University's Radcliffe Institute for providing photos taken by Child's husband, Paul.

In Honor of Julia Child's Birthday, Here's Proof that the Chef's Legacy Is Stronger Than Ever

We're still hooked on the beloved chef's first cookbook, original cooking shows, and, of course, her infatuation with butter. Julia Child needs no introduction. The legendary cookbook author and TV personality, who would have turned 106-years-old today, introduced America to French culinary techniques with her acclaimed cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Child also became one of the first-ever chefs to host a televised cooking show, making her voice one of the most recognizable in the country.

On her first cooking show after publishing her landmark book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Julia Child made cooking fun and fearless. Childs husband took this photo at a promo shoot, which poked fun at the amount of work it took to produce the show. The tight behind-the-scenes work paved the way for how cooking shows are made today.

Throughout the years, Childs influence has seeped from the culinary world into many other aspects of society, most notably pop culture, like when comedian Dan Aykroyd performed a hilarious parody on Saturday Night Live in 1978. More recently, Meryl Streep portrayed Child in Julie & Julia, a Nora Ephron-written movie based on a true story. (If you havent seen it, be prepared to come away craving butter).
Childs impact has always been strong, and if the past year is any indication, that power wont be wavering anytime soon. To honor the beloved chefs birthday, here are all of the recent reasons that prove Julia Child is still an influential culinary figure:

2. "I enjoy cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food..."
3. "If you're afraid of butter, use cream."
4. "People who love to eat are always the best people."
5. "It's so beautifully arranged on the plate you know someone's fingers have been all over it."
6. "Always remember: If you're alone in the kitchen and you drop the lamb, you can always just pick it up. Who's going to know?"
7. Child quoted Oscar Wilde when she said, "everything in moderation...including moderation."
8. "The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude."
9. "Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it."
