where she earned first class honors in English. She was prevented from graduating and holding an Oxford degree only because she was a woman. Her employment opportunities were as a low level teacher or a governess. No wonder she thought risking her life in an insane stunt was a good bargain, women had nothing going for them as England exited the Edwardian era.

It was always thought either she was a suicide or determined to unseat the jockey riding the King's horse. That neither was the case just makes this more tragic. She never read the hate mail, she never regained consciousness.
