Well at least in my world, anyway.
So i got a new doctor. After the usual questions he asked me if there is anything else.
"Yep, im a gay man" Said it like it was nothing.
Ive never admitted that to a doctor before. I said it was like no big deal, which it isnt. I guess coming out is still has its surprises.
Anyway, to ALL of my LGTBQ family, tell your doctor if you feel comfortable to do so. He gave me a lot of advice that was needed in case of, well, fun things.
Major hugs to all my friends

(9,597 posts)I get HRT from a doctor in Lubbock (around 3 hours drive away from me) who I trust. There might be other good trustworthy doctors in my part of Rural Texas, but living in a small town I dare not risk it.
I literally fear that if parents discover that a teacher is taking mtf HRT (even if I do not currently plan to socially transition any time soon) that I could end up being harassed or even attacked.

(34,381 posts)I am so pleased you were able to do that. I am sure it takes a whole lot of courage. My brother never told his docs and he died 20 years ago of AIDS. He did not know it until he flew up to me when he was sick, very sick. At that time he might have been able to prolong his life but he was too afraid.
I totally understand how hard that must be. I have worked on these issues since I lost my brother and am always still surprised to know people who will not speak of it with anyone but a safe friend. It takes a lot of courage, especially depending on where you live. Step one in saving your life and being a healthy human is to at least tell your physician. That should be a safe place.
Posts like these always make me smile. HUGS to you.

(7,080 posts)Like the saying goes- Never lie to your doctor or your lawyer. Glad he was helpful. If he hadnt been you could always move on. This is written by a 76 yr old straight woman in case it matters. You are loved and living.

(481 posts)With both you and your doctor. I personally think that what you did to introduce that info was right on - I'm proud of you - and his attitude and actions after you told him were just how he should have been - respectful and informative.

(1,076 posts)and we had a doctor visit and speak about health issues pertinent to gay men. During his talk, he said "If you are not comfortable telling your doctor that you're gay, you have the wrong doctor." That has always stuck with me and I've considered it with every doctor I've had since then.
Congratulations! The doctor knowing you're gay will help with the care he gives you.
