Human Rights Campaign Condemns North Carolina Senate for Passing Anti-Trans Sports Ban
Raleigh, North Carolina – Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization — condemned the North Carolina Senate for passing House Bill 574, which would prohibit transgender students from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity.
In yet another sign of the historic level of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks sweeping state legislatures this year, this was the first anti-LGBTQ+ legislation to advance through the North Carolina General Assembly since their deeply discriminatory anti-transgender bathroom legislation in 2016 and 2017.
"HB 574 is a targeted attack against the LGBTQ+ community, and it’s a completely unnecessary bill. Women’s sports face many real challenges, including chronic underfunding, unequal pay, lack of access and harassment and abuse of athletes. None of those challenges are addressed by an attempt to prevent transgender students from participating in school sports alongside their friends.”

Earlier this year the Biden Administration issued proposed rules affirming that Title IX protects transgender students from discrimination in athletics and that state laws banning participation of transgender athletes are violations of federal law.
