Transgender Penn swimmer deemed eligible for Ivy League championships

As controversy continues to swirl regarding transgender Penn swimmer Lia Thomas received some good news on Tuesday. While there’s no confirmation that she will be able to swim in the NCAA championships, the Ivy League announced Thomas would be eligible to swim in the conference’s championships.

The Ivy League meet will take place February 16 through February 19.

Thomas made news by qualifying for three NCAA championship events and setting numerous program records in freestyle events. She had previously swam for the Penn men’s swim team until this season, prompting USA Swimming to change its policy for hormone levels in swimmers.

There is still a question as to whether or not Thomas will be eligible to swim in the upcoming NCAA championships, where she is currently qualified in the 200, 500 and 1650 yard freestyle races, although the prevailing thought is the NCAA’s staggered implementation of transgender policies will allow her to compete.
Those championships will take place March 16 through March 19.
