Transgender people and their allies have planned statewide protests against anti-trans legislation for this weekend.
They are demonstrating Saturday against three bills already filed in the South Dakota Legislature: House Bill 1005, which restricts bathroom use by sex assigned at birth, and House Bill 1006 and Senate Bill 46, which both would prevent trans girls from playing on girls sports teams.
These bills were filed before the official start of the 2022 Legislative Session, which commences Tuesday afternoon when Gov. Kristi Noem gives her State of the State address.
The ACLU of South Dakota is monitoring all three of these bills as part of the group's legislative priorities to protect LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit equality. And, these bills represent attempts to target, discriminate against and isolate transgender youth, organizers with the Transformation Project said. The Transformation Project works to uplift transgender people and families in South Dakota with education and support groups.
