Creative Speculation

He asked me about the recent report by the former head of the Israeli Space program of the existence of aliens and our cooperation with them.
I gave him the Carl Sagan quote of extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
Not sure it did any good.

Even if Neil deGrasse Tyson or Francis Collins for example claimed there were aliens, I would demand to see the evidence. I don't want him to be fooled by any charlatan coming along.

I study the Christian Bible and participate in Bible studies. I attempt to live out the spirit of what Jesus taught us as recorded in the scriptures.
That is about all I have to say about that.

(17,995 posts)Those videos that have recently surfaced are far from convincing. In fact there is a Youtuber out there who understands the instrumentation and duplicated some of the effects with standard military cameras.
I would love to be proved wrong though.

I grew up with pilots and other flight crew members.
They talk a lot when they have a few beers in them.

Of course it can be like the President in Independence Day, only given the information when the aliens are on the front door and knocking.

(21,320 posts)have super advanced technology similar to (but more advanced than) our own "auto-tune", but instead of making a singers voice in tune with a song, it would make a speakers (such as trumps) incoherent ramblings into something coherent and interesting???
I submit, kind Irish_Dem, that such a technology could NEVER exist! The computing power needed, even utilizing advanced quantum computers only speculated about in the most obscure sci-fi writings, would outstrip the available power in the entire universe!
And besides, the aliens are far more interested in the development of even more advanced anal probes. Everyone knows that. Pffft!

I've been researching and investigating UFOs for a long time (40+ years) and the probabilities are really, really low that they are from other planets, but then again, science doesn't know everything.
If it did, all scientist would be out of work.
That said, it's interesting how UFOs seemed to grow in sophistication, almost mirroring our progress in air travel. From the airships of the 1890s, flying saucers of the 1950s, all the way up to the triangle ships of today.
It kind of gives credibility to the belief that most (if not all) of these sightings are not ET, but the result of foreign and domestic defense programs, or even private individuals. Look at the Wright Brothers.

(11,869 posts)And the most ardent and likely earliest proponent of the"Terrestrial Alien Theory" is the very smart and accomplished Jacques Vallée. His classic work "Passport to Magonia" is a must read and re-read introducing the fascinating connection of Folklore and modern Ufology. YouTube has recent talks he has given. Now in his 80's, he provides an astounding breath of knowledge on many topics with Ufology at its core. His genius is to follow tales of UFO reports track them down and spend all the time needed, even in the remotest parts of the world, to investigate. But his main goal is to interview the witnesses in visceral depth and detail. I admit to being a big devotee of Vallée.
But I have my own pet Theory on the side. The Universe is about 14 Billion years old. Investigations of evolution of The Universe indicate life could have evolved somewhere there in the first 5 billion years. Given that huge 10 billion year head start (life on Earth is 4 billion years old), it is my belief The Universe not only contains life, it is teeming with it. There are multitudes of highly, to super-highly, advanced cultures. WE are visited by many races, cultures, tribes whatever you want to call them.
There may likely be some sort of agreement among these entities on how to handle contact (with lower tribes, us). That would explain the incredible varieties of entities and vehicles seen. Since each group may have its own motivation for interaction with us there could be some animosity or conflict between these groups which could explain some oddities. Physicists today have some pretty deep discussions about this stuff (especially time travel) and can see some support in their research.

and his investigations ARE incredibly detailed.
The flip side, language of the day, is also very true.
Your personal theory may prove to be correct, but because current science can't do the same thing (travel long distances through space in a practical amount of time), folks will say it's impossible.
Unfortunately, those folks keep forgetting that science doesn't know everything.
After all is said and done, I secretly hope you're right.

it didn't work for me.
The beginning of the end for me was when I found out that the government had lied about marijuana, and that made me doubt anything they or anyone in authority said from that day forward.
Carl Sagan is right, but the problem is that I've been researching and investigating UFOs for a long time (40+ years) and the probabilities ARE really, really low that they are from other planets, but then again, science doesn't know everything.

If your son-in-law is interested enough, he will also do his own research and find that there are some things that can't be easily explained. I wonder what his reaction will be to what you said then.

(14,238 posts)Your concept of how the sophistication of UFOs paralleled our increasing technology also applies to science fiction.
Frankensteins monster was brought to life in the 19th century by a new, mysterious force that people didnt understand called electricity.
A hundred years later, even low budget movies had to use radiation as the cause of unexplained phenomena.
Now, it is black holes and other aspects of deep space that are used to allow writers and thinkers to transcend the known world.

sci fi and horror have been in step with our scientific discoveries, but you have to agree that sometimes sci-fi drives science, instead of the other way around.
Look how the sci-fi of Star Trek has guided where some of our research is headed.
The transporter, for example.

Then faster than light travel is impossible no matter how advanced a society is.
This means that we may be able to exchange messages with lag times of decades or centuries, but traveling to visit will be impossible.

(17,995 posts)Still with sublight you could colonize the galaxy in under 100 million years which is a blink of an eye in even terrestrial geological time.
Of course by the time you are done there will be aliens if there wasn't before because humanity as a species will have split.
