Creative Speculation
Related: About this forumAn uptick in UFO sightings by military pilots raises all sorts of interesting questions.
For the last several years, the U.S. military has observed an increase in what it calls unexplained aerial phenomena. The rest of us may know them by their more common name unidentified flying objects and we should all strive, as the Navy is doing, to take these reports more seriously.
Sometimes, according to the Washington Post, well-trained military pilots claimed to observe small spherical objects flying in formation. Others say theyve seen white, Tic Tac-shaped vehicles. Aside from drones, all engines rely on burning fuel to generate power, but these vehicles all had no air intake, no wind and no exhaust. They also appear to exceed all known aircraft in speed and have been described by a former deputy assistant secretary of defense as embodying a truly radical technology.
No, I dont think the proverbial Little Green Men have come. But maybe you wonder about the probability, even if quite small, that aliens are visiting. An alien civilization doesnt have to send its people. It could build a few self-replicating von Neumann probes, as they are called, carrying artificial intelligence and powered by solar or nuclear energy. At some point you would expect such probes to wash up on our shores or transmit messages to us.
You can debate the actual numbers, but on the grounds of pure theory alone, the chance of alien contact of some kind is not so small. So on the yes side, on behalf of the notion that something truly strange is happening here, we have both pilot testimonials and pure theory. That is not nearly enough, in my view, to believe in alien visitation, but it is more weight than many people think.

(102 posts)When I have our home to myself and have some time to waste I like to watch UFO documentaries on YouTube.
In 2005 a bunch of working buds and I took a vacation and did a long motorcycle tour together. One of the places we went through was Marfa, Texas. We went to an observation pavilion at dusk and seen the Marfa ghost lights. Over the course of an hour, a couple dozen of these strange lights appeared. They're a mile or so away and seem to hover fairly close to the ground. Some pulsate, some don't. Some move a bit, some don't. They stay visible for a few seconds to about 1 minute then fade out.
I don't know what they were but I do know they were not car light, refracted star lights, swamp gas or phosphorus on rabbit tails.

(34,195 posts)I don't kniow what it was; thus unidentified flying object.
I was hitchhiking across Texas in the mid-1960s.
Standing about mid-day along an empty country road, waiting for a ride.
Large open field behind me, and woods beyond that.
I saw a long, dark, metallic cigar shaped craft slowly 'fly' above the woods; no wings; no sound.
After a couple minutes it sped up and was out of sight in seconds.
I never really told anyone but two brothers.

(71,798 posts)w everyone having a camera in their hands at all times, why havent pics and videos of more and more convincing phenomena surfaced?
i have no problem believing we are not alone, and also that we are far from the smartest kids on the block.
i also have no problem understanding that great mysteries like this bring out the charlatans and the simple.
i am glad the govt is taking this seriously, and look forward to actual evidence.
