Los Angeles protest against West Bank land sales turns violent

Demonstrators say they were attacked outside synagogue where lots in ‘Anglo neighborhoods’ were being marketed

Efforts to market homes in Israel and the West Bank to Jewish Americans are continuing to spark protests across North America, with the latest angry confrontations happening outside of a synagogue in one of Los Angeles’ most prominent Jewish neighborhoods.

The volatile protest and counter-protest outside a real estate event at the Adas Torah synagogue on Sunday prompted denunciations from Democratic politicians, including Joe Biden, who said protests targeting a house of worship were antisemitic and unacceptable. The Los Angeles demonstration was the latest in a series of heated demonstrations outside similar Israeli real estate events held at synagogues across North America this year, including in Toronto, Canada; New Jersey; Baltimore, Maryland; and North Hollywood.

One of the real estate companies named in an advertisement for the Los Angeles event, My Home in Israel, has listed high-end properties for sale in West Bank settlements on its website, including boutique apartments in Ariel and luxury villas in Efrat. Israel’s settlements in the West Bank are widely considered illegal under international law. The US recently restored its position that they are “inconsistent” with international law.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators shared video of pro-Israel counterprotesters yelling racial slurs, and said that the counterprotesters had punched them, kicked them, chased them, ripped hijabs from the heads of Muslim women, made rape threats and followed some demonstrators back to their cars in an attempt to photograph their license plates.

So ethnic cleansing is a real estate event?

that synagogue is not antisemitic (inherently anyway, the conduct of the protesters certainly could be). WTF is Biden talking about? That is where the behavior being protested is occurring, it is reasonable to choose that site to protest, and houses of worship don't get a free pass on that. If your local Catholic priest got exposed as a child abuser, protesting outside the church would be perfectly reasonable. If your local mosque hosted a violent radical speaker, protesting outside the mosque would be totally reasonable. This isn't a case of people protesting the nearest synagogue because something happened somewhere else in the world (that could/would be antisemitic and unacceptable), the protest was about what that synagogue was doing that day.

to cry foul when people rightfully protest?

using a place of worship as a shield for this kind of evil is truly despicable

to do "research" on the March West Bank apartment sale, it failed to consider that the apartment building was in a pre-Geneva Accords Israeli settlement that Israel retained through the Geneva Accords in a land swap agreement.

If it's not being used as a religious building at the time, charge rent (or make the facilities available for free, their call) for another to use it.

Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church in west Houston is used by Guitar Houston for their completely secular concerts , for example.

Then again, back in the '80s my old church rented out a Grange Hall.

And they're not uncommon polling places. Cover anything political or unduly offensive and there you go. (The first place I voted in Los Angeles was in a church.)

chanting “Free, free Palestine - from the river to the sea" outside the synagogue. That in of itself is an antisemitic chant, as it calls for the destruction of all Jews living in Israel.
