Citing lack of faith in Israeli system, NGO will no longer report human rights violations on behalf of Palestinians, says doing so does not bring justice
For over 25 years, the BTselem human rights organization has filed complaints on behalf of Palestinian victims of alleged abuse by the IDF, police and Israeli settlers in the West Bank and Gaza but no more.
Citing lack of faith in the system, the group announced Wednesday it will no longer report abuse claims to the Israel Defense Forces and Israel Police.
BTselem will continue to document human rights violations carried out by Israel in the territories and to report on them, but will no longer file complaints, coordinate meetings between Military Police investigators, victims and Palestinian witnesses, and acquire various documents for the investigatory authorities, the group said Wednesday morning.
However, a spokesperson said, the organization will still abide by court orders and official requests for information. If police request a copy of a video filmed by a BTselem volunteer, for instance, it will be honored.

(30,109 posts)"Nasser Nawajiya, who is mentioned in the report, is a B'Tselem field operative in southern Har Hevron, but he is also a Palestinian from the village of Khirbet Susya... When he found out about a Palestinian with Israeli citizenship who pretended to be a real estate salesperson and offered to sell land, part of which belonged to [Nawajiya's] family, he reported it to the Palestinian authorities.
"This is the only legitimate channel for a Palestinian, given that Israeli authorities do not defend Palestinian landowners in the area from settlers taking over their land," wrote B'Tselem.
The alleged "crime" that is being reported is selling property to a Jew, which is illegal under the Palestinian Authority and punishable by death.
B'Tselem added that it "opposes all torture and all executions...whether they are done in Shin Bet (Israeli Security Agency) cellars or in the Palestinian Authority," but did not comment on the fact that the sales are reported with the full intention that the seller should be killed.
B'tselem couldn't give a shit about Palestinians who do not serve their political purposes.

Knowing what the PA would do, I want to know if you would do the same. Would you report a Palestinian to the PA knowing full well they could face torture/death?
Or is this where you run and hide from the question?

Detained B'Tselem Activist Released After Two Weeks in Jails

(snip)
In his decision to release Nawaja on Sunday, the judge at the military court in Ofer Camp were Nawaja was held - ruled that the police investigation showed no progress, and that it wasn't clear at all that Nawaja posed any danger to the safety of the land dealer in question, an Israeli resident. The court gave the police 24 hours to appeal the release. As no appeal was filed, Nawaja was released.
Nawaja was initially held in a Jerusalem jail. On Thursday, the Jerusalem District Court ordered Nawaja released, after granting his lawyers' petition that an Israeli court does not have the authority to rule in his case as the offense was neither committed in Israel nor security related.

Do you support that?
You want to point to this particular case, but B'tselem defends this practice in general.

(6,171 posts)Besides, when the selling of land to Israelis is reported to the IDF, no action is taken, so how can this be prevented? And from what I understand, the Israeli seller was trying to sell land that wasn't his, which ought to be a criminal offense even according to Israeli legal standards...
You don't even have a feather to build your hen with...
The real issue here is that B'Tselem, which is a trusted human rights NGO has lost confidence in the IDF's ability to investigate itself.
Welcome to Russia.

(30,109 posts)The PA will do exactly what Ezra Nawi predicted they would do, and that would result in torture and/or death.
You're the one defending Russian practices, not due process. It's ridiculous to assume the PA would give this man due process. Really, it's laughable. Now seriously, what do you expect the PA would do with this man? You say it's the only way - that B'tselem is right and the PA is the only organization capable of dealing with this since Israel won't. Okay, so how would the PA deal with this? What do you expect them to do?

....is to turn this guy in to the PA? You just agreed with B'tselem even though you say the PA has no jurisdiction over Israeli Palestinians.
You're twisting yourself into a pretzel.
You say this is the only way, that Israel won't do shit.....but now you say the PA can't do a damned thing about it either. So how is this the only way? Why did you agree with B'tselem?
Ezra Nawi knew what would happen and you damned well know it. B'tselem knows that. See what happens when you defend & embrace stupid, idiotic positions? Hell, when's the last time you positively proved yourself and nailed it WRT anything I/P here? It's all smoke and mirror bullshit. I can't remember the last time you presented and then proved a position of yours with facts. It's all hyperbole, exaggeration, and propaganda.
