Myanmar: Alleged attack kills dozens of civilians from the Muslim Rohingya minority - DW News

Troubling new reports from Myanmar say that dozens of civilians from the Muslim Rohingya minority have been killed in an alleged attack by separatist rebels.

It reportedly happened in the western Rakhine state in the past week. According to witnesses cited by the Associated Press and Reuters news agencies, at least 150 people died after being deliberately targeted while trying to flee into neighboring Bangladesh. The alleged attack near the town of Maungdaw is being blamed on the Arakan Army – which has been fighting Myanmar's military in the area. The rebel group has denied responsibility for the reported killings.

For more on this, we are joined from Bangkok by Poppy McPherson. She’s a Special Southeast Asia correspondent for the Reuters news agency, who's been reporting this story.

And for more background information, we talk to Kyle Matthews, executive director of the Montréal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia University.
