Russia steps up response to Ukrainian incursion of Kursk region - DW News

Russia is stepping up its response to a Ukrainian incursion – vowing a tough reaction to the offensive on its own soil.

Russia's Defense Ministry released images of what it says are strikes on a Ukrainian tank and drone in the Kursk region. The Russian army says it has repelled attacks near two villages.

Meanwhile, Russian state media are reporting more than 76,000 people have been evacuated from border areas. With the incursion now into its 6th day, the local governor says 13 people were injured after Ukrainian drones and missiles were shot down over the Kursk region.

For more on this, we talk to Marina Miron at the War Studies Department at King's College London.

But it’s still hugely embarrassing for Putin to have Ukrainian forces on Russian soil for this long basically doing whatever they want. It’s also suggestive that so much of the Russian army is engaged in Ukraine they have little capacity to react anywhere else. China and Russia also have a territorial dispute in the far East. If China just decided to take that land it appears there is little Russia could do to stop them.
