Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh assassinated in Iran, group says

Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political wing, has been killed in Iran, Hamas announced, describing the death as an assassination. He was killed in Tehran after attending the inauguration of Iran’s new president, the group said in a statement. Hamas blamed Israel for the death, but it was unclear how Haniyeh was killed. The Israel Defense Forces declined to comment.

Israel mum after Haniyeh’s high-profile killing

Israel was officially mum on reports from Tehran early Wednesday, which immediately raised suspicions — or assumptions — that Israel was behind the reported killing of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s top political leader.

Military public information groups posted only routine notices of events unrelated to Haniyeh. An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson declined to address questions on the topic. Without confirming or denying the news, Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi said in a cryptic post on social media, “So perish all thine enemies, O LORD.” The post was quickly taken down.

The nondenial silence is in keeping with Israel’s posture following high-profile strikes and assassinations around the region, including operations inside Iran. The country has long maintained a posture of “strategic ambiguity” that allows it to avoid claiming official responsibility for extrajudicial operations while getting credit for delivering a blow to its enemies.

Iran has convened its Supreme National Security Council for an emergency meeting. There will be retaliation, methinks. Hopefully this doesn't result in a full-blown spiral.
