Hungarian prime minister says parliament set to ratify Sweden's NATO bid later this month - DW News

In his annual state-of-the-nation address, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said parliament is set to ratify Sweden's membership of NATO later this month.

Hungary has been the last holdout on the long-awaited Swedish bid - a delay Orban's party blames on what it calls unfounded claims by Stockholm that Budapest is undermining democracy.

This comes as Orban faces a test of his hold on power: A scandal over a pardon that's already prompted Hungary's president to resign.

watching what's happening in Ukraine and thinking of their nation's history with Russia, are not thrilled at the idea of being so out of step with the rest of NATO.

The fact that Orban's buddy in the US has threatened to let Putin "do whatever the hell he wants" in Europe is perhaps another factor as well.
