The long-awaited and often-delayed Potomac Yard Metro station will welcome riders on Friday, May 19.
When riders travel to the station, they may be awestruck by its excellent views and pleasant aesthetic.
The only reason were standing here is because our community never gave up on this project. Our community has been pushing for this station for a generation and beyond, Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson told reporters during the opening announcement.
The station is located in the fastest-growing area of Alexandria, Virginia, between the Reagan National and Braddock Road stations. It is only the second-ever in-fill station a station built between two extant stations on a line and Metros 98th station overall.
When Blue and Yellow line riders come, they will find views of the George Washington Parkway, Potomac River, the Washington Monument and even the U.S. Capitol from the stations northern end. ..............(more)

That's National Airport in the upper right hand corner. The Potomac River is off to the right. The buses will come in on the left hand side of the picture. The pedestrian bridge goes over the CSX tracks. The head south, off the left hand side of the picture, to Alexandria. The cranes are there for the construction of a Virginia Tech building.

At long last, Metros Potomac Yard Station in Alexandria will open on May 19, the transit agency and the City of Alexandria announced on Wednesday.
The $370 million project along the Blue and Yellow lines is located between the National Airport and Braddock Road stations. Its Metros 98th station overall, and the second infill station after NoMa-Gallaudet.
Metro is planning an opening event on May 19. Finishing work will continue in and around the station after opening, but the station will be ready for passengers.

City of Alexandria
The station is a unique design in the Metro system because of its impact on the historic view of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Metro had to get approval for the design, which was partly inspired by the architecturally-famous Thorncrown Chapel in Arkansas. It uses big soaring beams and lots of light in the station. It also features natural stone and brown steel on the exterior to blend into the area, says {Metros VP of Infrastructure Andy Off}.
It is one of the best-looking stations in the system really, {Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson} said. Its a striking design that will have people excited.
