In recent years, with the goals of high standard, sustainability and improvement of people's livelihood, China has continuously improved the level of Belt and Road cooperation, achieved mutual benefits and win-win results for participating countries, and opened up new space for the development of the world economy.
As a docking project between the Belt and Road Initiative and Laos' strategy to convert itself from a landlocked country to a land-linked hub, it will slash the travel time between the two cities to about 10 hours.
Sleek bullet trains will travel at a speed of 160 km per hour, through mountains and valleys.
..
Faster than any train in Western Hemisphere in Laos.

(7,923 posts)Laos and Malaysia, all the way to Singapore with huge economic "free zones" in each country. They want to build huge manufacturing cities in the free zones and bring in Chinese citizens to run them. They will then be able to use the resources of those countries and buy up the crops of those countries to feed their billions. So far only Laos has agreed but other countries are agreening in part. Malaysia is going to allow the rail portion of the plan from what I have read.

(1,960 posts)There are services in North America that meet or exceed that.
Amtrak's Acela, as well as all electrically operated regional and long distance trains in the Northeast corridor routinely exceed 100mph/160kph.
Here is the GPS we had setup in our room on our trip on Amtrak's Silver Meteor (from my website https://northamericabyrail.info/ ):
Southbound:
And return trip northbound:
Here in Canada, track speed along much of VIA Rail's Ontario-Quebec corridor is 100mph/160kph (youtube video-not mine):

BTW my reply strictly referred to your comment about speed.
That said, the VIA Rail Canada train cars shown in the video are European made made by Metro-Cammel.
And even those are already being replaced now by brand new new 201kph (125mph) Siemens loco & car trainsets, for both VIA (Canada's national network):
And Ontario Northland (regional line):
Finally, the Govt of Canada started the procurement process for a new passenger-only line between Toronto, Montreal & Quebec
