5 Things Frugal People Do Not Do
1. They dont pay for items on credit. When you buy something on credit not only do you pay for that item but you pay interest. So you pay MORE for the items then you already planned too! Ouch! So what do frugal people do? They save money to pay cash for those items. They make car payments to themselves, they make house payments to themselves instead of to the bank, and they earn interest for themselves in a savings account! Plus you can score a better deal when you offer to pay cash for something!
2. They dont waste leftovers. Tossing left over food is like tossing money right in the trash! Eat the leftovers for lunch and save on lunch the next day! Some frugal people take it to the next level and purposefully cook extra to have leftovers for lunch. End of the week and have left overs still in the fridge? Have a left overs meal, that means no cooking!
3. They dont ignore the clearance rack. In fact, frugal people tend to hit clearance racks first. Walking into a clothing store, they gravitate to them to find what they need there first. Even grocery stores have clearance racks, so why pay full price for something on your list when you can get it at a discount? They also remember that just because it's on clearance doesn't make it a deal if you don't need the item.

(54,151 posts)as soon as you get the statement, you can go online and schedule the full statement balance for the exact due date.
as long as you aren't carrying a balance across statements, you don't pay any interest, and the money instead is earning interest for you in your bank account or wherever you have your money.
that's a tiny interest rate these days but hey, it's money.
of course with credit cards this is a good idea only if you're very diligent and disciplined about paying the statement balance in full by the due date. get a single payment late and you've blown at least a year's worth of interest savings.

(4,635 posts)Stagnant wages and corporate employment churn means most families are frugal by necessity not choice. This family has battled "unemployment" episodes since the 80s. These tips are typical of authors who have no clue about how and what families sacrifice to just keep food on the table or the lights on. Most will never ever return to a time when frugal living wasn't just experiments in saving for a rainy day -- all their days are rainy -- all conveniences that break are emergencies -- all gift-giving, donating, and traveling have long since been replaced by surviving.
