My frugal 7 day emergency food & water stock for 2 people
Food
7 -15 oz. cans of pork and beans ( 1 can for two people per day)
7 -12 oz. cans of luncheon meat ( 1 can for two people per day)
14 -5 oz. cans of tuna in water (1 can per person per day)
14 - 14.5 oz. cans of various vegetables (1 can per person per day)
2 - 16 oz. jars of peanut butter (4 tbsp per person per day)
7 - 15 oz. cans of unsweetened applesauce ( 1 can for two people per day)
4 - loafs of bread kept in the freezer to be taken out and thawed when needed (4 slices per person per day)
3 - 18 oz. boxes of Cheerios (3 cups per person per day. To be eaten w/o milk like crackers of chips)
1 - 24 oz. bottle of ketchup
1 - 14 oz. bottle of yellow mustard
Water
83 - 16 oz. water bottles
1 -5 gal. container of water
1 - 55 gal. container of water (for flushing the toilet only)
1 - 40 gal. of water in the water heater (for personal hygiene, the dog and washing kitchen utensils)
As I bought much of the above from Dollar General and Family Dollar, the total cost wasn't much. Tuna was .75 a can. The vegetables were .50 or .65 a can depending on variety. Van Kamps pork and beans was on sale for .50 a can. The ketchup and mustard was 1.00 each. Armour Treet luncheon meat was 1.65 a can. Water was 2.50 for 2 24 packs plus I had some already.
When I put my list together, I wanted foods that didn't need to be heated or refrigerated nor did they need water to prepare. The bread, condiments, peanut butter and cereal can be left on the counter and each opened can of food will be consumed in its entirety that day so there'd be no left overs to refrigerate.
It is my intention to expand this over time so there'd be a 30 day supply of water and food for my wife and I plus our dog. The needed cereal will be a combination of purchased crispbread and homemade hardtack which has a shelf life of practically forever if properly stored. I also plan on completing my water less toilet project which will eliminate the need for water to flush the toilets.
In the planning stages is a 90 day emergency supply. The 90 day supply will contain mostly rice and various dried beans along with 3 55 gallon barrels of potable water. As a backup for cooking in case I run out of propane, I'll have a rocket stove fueled by wood which can be assembled when and if needed (see link below).
In conjunction with this is continued work on the 1800 square feet vegetable garden and fruit tree plot to be located in the back yard. This is a multi year project and it is my goal that the gardens and fruit trees will produce enough to not only supply my wife and I several months of fresh and stored food but also provide some for my adult step children and their children who live near by.
So, in summary, the 7 day emergency supply is completed and on hand ready if needed. I'll be working now simultaneously on the 30 day supply, the 90 day supply and the gardens.

(3,585 posts)which means that your list doesn't require paying much attention to it like some poor shelf life items do.

(14,651 posts)This is prolly the easiest Rocket stove build yet... Totally weather proof and ready to be built whenever you need it... Good stuff..

(14,651 posts)Normally they are one on top of each other. Makes it real simple to build. Also you can vary the chimney length to get the right draw... I like the use of another brick to vary the air intake for the flue... Brill!! Simple always works the best...
