World’s first portable hydrogen cracker can produce 1,100 pounds fuel per day

FC Energy has announced the launch of Hy-5, a groundbreaking portable hydrogen generation module under its Hyamtec brand. Set for delivery in 2026, Hy-5 is the world’s first containerized cracking module capable of producing up to 1,100 pounds (500 kg) of hydrogen per day.

The innovative system will be offered on a “plug and play” basis through a “fuel as a service” (FaaS) model, with on-site hydrogen priced at £10/kg—much lower than the market price, even with a government subsidy.

“Lack of infrastructure and the high cost of hydrogen production are seen as the biggest challenges to scaling the hydrogen industry. With the launch of Hy-5, AFC Energy has removed these, launching on-site supply at a market disruptive price point,” said John Wilson, Chief Executive of AFC Energy.

A scalable and cost-effective solution for hydrogen production

Hy-5 is expected to open doors to many industries due to its ability to produce hydrogen with a purity greater than 99.9% at ISO14687 grade D. This technology is a great enabler for Grid hydrogen-powered generators, fuel cell and hydrogen combustion vehicle refueling stations, and construction equipment such as excavators and mining trucks...more

For most of us, though, the laws of thermodynamics makes this a bit less of an attractive option.

2. Oh. A perpetual motion machine. Ammonia is made from hydrogen, destroying exergy in the process.

Since the point of hydrogen hype is to sell fossil fuels as something they're not, green, this should work well at accelerating the use of dangerous fossil fuels by accelerating wasteful uses thereof.
