What a good book source for somebody who's literate, but not a science geek on the subject?

3. If one wishes to believe in the hydrogen scam, a good place to start would be to avoid science.

The scam has been running half a century roughly, so anyone who considers this marketing of disaster a "party" is indeed late.

It was bullshit in 1975; and bullshit in 2000, and is bullshit in 2024. The reason is the inviolable laws of thermodynamics, which is regrettable for people who wish to avoid science, but essential for anyone who cares about the future of humanity and the planet.

5. There are lots and lots and lots of such books, but they require a respect for science. Here's one:

Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, 9th Edition

There are literally thousands of such texts, undoubtedly in scores, if not hundreds, of languages. The laws of thermodynamics define something called "truth."

I've been working with the laws of thermodynamics for decades. As a scientist who considers the laws of thermodynamics they key issue in energy and the environment, I've known for all those decades that the hydrogen scam is a marketing ploy to front for the fossil fuel industry, rather like sequestration and other similar unserious highly marketed frauds.

If one wants something at a low level, even the functional anti-nuke idiot Joe Romm gets it: The Hype About Hydrogen

Now mind you, Joe isn't very good with numbers. He doesn't give a rat's ass about the 90 to 100 million people who died from air pollution while he and his fellow fools worried that someone might die someday from a radiation leak at Fukushima, but in this case he's on to something.

Solar Hydrogen: Fuel of the Future – 15 June 2012

by Mario Pagliaro & Athanasios G Konstandopoulos (notice it's not by Americans!)

Renewable hydrogen produced using solar energy to split water is the energy fuel of the future. Accelerated innovation in both major domains of solar energy (photovoltaics and concentrated solar power) has resulted in the rapid fall of the solar electricity price, opening the route to a number of practical applications using solar H2. New thermochemical water splitting using concentrated solar power (CSP) as well as CSP coupled to electrolysis has the potential to convert and store solar energy into clean hydrogen using a tiny fraction of the world's desert area to meet our present and future global energy needs.

Photovoltaics, in turn, has the versatility required for supporting the creation of a distributed energy generation infrastructure in developing countries especially now that the price of PV solar electricity has fallen to unprecedented low levels. In all these cases, solar H2 will be used to store energy and release it on demand either for fuel cells (to power homes and boats) or internal combustion engines and turbines (for powering cars, trucks and in thermoelectric power units).

This book on solar hydrogen is unique in its field and is a timely treatment of a hot topic in industry, academic, political and environmental circles. With reference to many examples as well as to new technologies, this accessible book provides insight into a crucial technology for our common future and numerous colour pictures contribute to the book's readability. Written by experts in the field who are engaged at the forefront of research, the book supplies readers with last minute insight from the frontiers of research. The book will be of interest to Politicians, solar PV companies, hydrogen and sustainability researchers, environmentalists, managers in the automotive and nautical industries, undergraduate and graduate students in physics, chemistry, energy and materials science.

Some deep searching and you can find this online for free as a PDF

The book is fantastic at detailing the history of hydrogen. For example, many people say H2 embrittlement prevents the piping of H2 - while ignoring that before natural gas (1960's) there was town gas, which was 50% hydrogen. This book shows that some of that exact same piping still exists.

Those same naysayers know nothing about this either

Air Products’ U.S. Gulf Coast hydrogen network Enhanced reliability from the world’s largest hydrogen pipeline

The new, 180-mile pipeline expands our Gulf Coast hydrogen supply network to more than 600 miles, stretching from the Houston Ship Channel in Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana

The United States economy is tied to the PetroDollar (Thanks to Dick and Hank) so it's understandable that Hydrogen wouldn't be very popular with those who want to keep the status quo. But that isn't true for a nation like China. Hence the vitriol and hate for H2 (and China) with 'Murikans! It's amusing, but depressing. With any luck at all I'll be out of the US soon. Finished. It's become a hell hole. I'm not here for silly upvotes anyway.

2. All of which will be inefficient, expensive to operate, and dependent on electricity largely produced by coal.
Tue Apr 2, 2024, 08:55 PM
Apr 2024

It is, like all hydrogen rhetoric, a fossil fuel promotion scheme.

In my entire adult life, people have been chasing after electrolyzers that can operate as cheaply as fossil fuel reformers (which still, in 2024, dominate the filthy hydrogen industry) and all efforts have failed.

The chief "benefit" of electrolyzers is marketing by the "bait and switch" fossil fuel promoters who want to greenwash fossil fuels as hydrogen.

The reality is real enough, as published in a recent scientific publication in a prominent journal:

Subsidizing Grid-Based Electrolytic Hydrogen Will Increase Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Coal Dominated Power Systems Liqun Peng, Yang Guo, Shangwei Liu, Gang He, and Denise L. Mauzerall Environmental Science & Technology 2024 58 (12), 5187-5195

The text is clear enough.

From the introductory text:

... Currently, nearly all hydrogen in China is either produced directly from fossil fuels (55% from coal gasification and 14% from steam methane reforming (SMR)) or as a byproduct of petroleum refining (28%), with only 1% coming from water electrolysis. (2) Producing 1 kg of coal- or SMR-based hydrogen emits roughly 19 and 10 kg of CO2, respectively. (3) In 2020, hydrogen production from fossil fuels in China emitted ∼322Tg of CO2, equivalent to 25% of total CO2 emissions from industrial processes, a number expected to rise with increasing hydrogen demand. (4) Industrial processes include production of nonmetallic mineral products, chemical, and metal products, as well as production and consumption of halocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride. (4)
.

The bold, italics and underlining is mine.

EST: Chinese Hydrogen Production Is Making Climate Change Worse.

China leads the world in carbon emissions (albeit not on a per capita basis, that dubious distinction belongs to the US) and 25% of the industrial emissions in that country are from the production of hydrogen, which is dishonestly being represented as "green" whereas it is actually filthy, filthy, filthy.

Of course there is a reason that electrolysis remains a trivial contributor to hydrogen production: Electrolyzers thermodynamically inefficient and waste huge amounts of electrical energy, further degrading the already thermodynamically degraded form that electricity represents. Since in China, electricity remains a very dirty product, although they're leading the world in going nuclear against climate change, electrolyzers drive climate change. Electrolyzers expensive, unreliable, suffer from hysteresis, corrosion, and produce problematic side products.

Again their chief value is to allow for fossil fuel salespeople and sales bots to further their contempt for the environment by joining in greenwashing fossil fuels along with the liars talking about sequestration. (Yesterday, we had a case here where a fossil fuel salesperson started to talk about Alberta where both fossil fuel greenwashing scams operated simultaneously, sequestration and hydrogen.)

A better term for them would be electroLIARs.
