Dubai's ENOC Group launches the region's first green solar/hydrogen fuel station

Dubai’s ENOC Group launches the region’s first green hydrogen fuel station

The hydrogen station is located in Service Station of the Future at Expo City Dubai

Zawya Projects | December 8, 2023

Dubai-headquartered ENOC Group and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) have partnered to open a green hydrogen fuel station at Expo City Dubai, where COP28 is underway.

The Service Station of the Future (SSoF) thus becomes the only station in the region to provide green hydrogen, hydrocarbon fuels (petrol and diesel) as well as electric vehicle charging stations, according to an ENOC press statement.

The station will be utilised to fuel approximately 25 cars (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles / FCEV) at a fuelling speed of approximately 7 minutes. It will offer reliable dual fuelling options at 350 and 700 bar, which can be scaled to meet growing demand in the future.

The green hydrogen station was inaugurated by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Chairman of ENOC in the presence of ENOC Group’s CEO, Saif Humaid Al Falasi.

The green hydrogen is supplied by DEWA from its pilot plant located in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The DFM-listed utility currently uses a 1.25 MW PEM electrolyser to produce green hydrogen at a rate of 20 kg per hour using daylight solar power.

Al-Futtaim Motors Toyota, the Strategic E-Mobility Partner of COP28, is providing ENOC Group and DEWA with four hydrogen-powered fuel cell Toyota Mirai vehicles for testing and use during COP28, the ENOC statement said...more

...H2 can be produced in enough quantity ON SITE using on site solar for the average sized fueling station?

In other words, could a completely independent off-grid package of H2 production and fueling be done in a reasonable size to locate where needed?

Think. Again.

...even if self-contained H2 stations are, at first, only located along major transport routes to be used by heavier cargo trucks and mass transit buses, it will be a great start until we finally switch smaller personal vehicles away from batteries and onto H2!

Thanks!

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park

Source of electricity for the green hydrogen used at the new H2 station above

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a solar park spread over a total area of 77 km2 (30 sq mi) in Saih Al-Dahal, about 50 km (31 mi) south of the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).[1]

It is one of the world's largest renewable projects based on an independent power producer (IPP) model. Besides solar farms using PV technology, the project includes concentrating solar power (CSP), with the total capacity of the entire project planned to reach more than 4,000 megawatts.[2] It is estimated that the park will be generating 5 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030.[3]

The plant was implemented by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The first phase of the project was commissioned on 22 October 2013. At the end of 2020 the solar PV complex reached a generating capacity of 1.013 GW with the aim to reach 5GW by 2030.[4] The 4th (700 MW CSP + 250 MW PV, known as Noor Energy 1) and 5th phase (900 MW PV) are under construction.

The 200-megawatt second phase of the project drew global attention as the winning bid of the tender set a new record-low tariff of only US ¢5.89 per kilowatt-hour. This is about 20% lower than any previous, unsubsidized power purchase agreement (PPA) the world has seen before. The PPA is set to a 25-year time frame.[5][6]

...how the middle-eastern oil nations are taking advantage of our western refusal to transition away from fossil fuels while they, themselves, are making huge leaps forward to transition away from oil.

It's like they're setting themselves up to have stronger, functioning societies than us while also selling us the product that will destroy our society.
