Can anyone name this fiction book: a better world where children and adults learn at their own

pace, and study what they want. And the love of learning returns. Instead of being yanked out as our education system does. (deliberately).
In the book, a woman (Puerto Rican I think) is diagnosed with a "mental illness" and she alternates between the real world and this ideal world.
I want to talk about this book in a discussion I'm having about education and I am totally blank on the title or author.

Each of the characters in real time has a counterpart in the ideal world. Also a brief view of an opposing dystopia.
