Strongsville teachers strike spurs talk of SB5 and subsequent repeal, but issue unlikely to resurface in legislature

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Legislation passed by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. John Kasich two years ago outlawed strikes by public workers like the one involving teachers in Strongsville that's now in its fourth day.

But the law never took effect. And there is no hint that lawmakers in Columbus will revisit the idea anytime soon.

The General Assembly approved the hotly contested law, known as Senate Bill 5, early in 2011 and the governor signed it that March. It would have overhauled laws governing collective bargaining for 360,000 public employees in the state and specifically prohibited strikes.
