I never have understood the preoccupation .... on the part of some segments of the general public... with micromanaging teachers and classrooms *specifically*. Doesn't ANYONE in ANY other profession *ANYWHERE* underperform EVER?
Why not micromanage cops? Firefighters? Bankers? Politicians. Hedge Fund managers. Hi-way workers. Postal employees. Real estate brokers. Tax attorneys.
I want Value-Added for Everyone!
So does the famously rubber-roomed NYC whistleblower Mr. Portelos. Cooling his heels in 'solitary confinement' for a year while the NYC Dept. of Ed lawyers ( Hey. Who's 'value-adding' THEM , btw?) try to figure out what to charge him with and how to shut him up.
Here he has some fun with the idea:
>>>New NYC Firefighter Evaluations
by Fportelos on February 5, 2013 in Uncategorized
As the mayor of NYC and governor of NYS try to come up with a better way to support teachers, by evaluating them, the public asks
.Why only evaluate and support teachers?
The public is absolutely right. Dont other civil servants need support as well? Lets change the evaluation system for everyone! replied the mayor, during a press conference yesterday.
Starting next month, every FDNY employee will undergo a strict new evaluation. 20% of the evaluation will be based on something called Value Retained Model or VRM. The way VRM works is that an accountability expert will make sure to arrive to the scene of a fire first. They will take pictures and videos of the building from the point they arrive to the time the firefighters have finished. The status of the building at arrival will be labeled B1. This is similar to the standardized test score of a child entering a teachers class in September. B2 will respectively be the status of the building upon departure of the last firefighter. . B2 is similar to the standardized test score of a child at the end of the school year. The difference between B2 and B1 (also known as Delta B) will be entered into a simple formula, as depicted in Figure 1 below.

(4,452 posts)I think "value added evaluation" should be enacted from the top down. After all, those in decision making positions do have some control over others who actually get things done.
Hey thanks for linking. I have a couple of other ones I'm working on. Subscribe to be updated on some crazy posts coming this week.

I'd give it a "4", i.e "Highly Effective" with a lot of "value added".
