Education

Seems to me the DEM Party has to figure out where it's going and what kind of a political entity it wishes to be. The media this morning is all about how the GOP is ripe for some kind of fundamental realignment. But it's really OUR party which is " a house divided against itself."
Let's not let the transient euphoria of having escaped a Romney presidency ( for now) blind us to this glaring reality: we... as a political party.... "GOT PROBLEMS".
Here's a recently discovered favorite of mine: RagingHorseBlog. He's "in his glory" here. ( N.B. I waited 'til AFTER the election to post this here. It's about figuring out who we ARE. Not helping the GOP.)
>>>Fours years into the works RTTT is incrementally succeeding at all of these goals accompanied by the startling spectacle of union teachers praising the president and rallying for the reelection of the man who is actively and consciously destroying their workplaces, threatening their livelihoods and force feeding a lousy paint-by-numbers pseudo education on the nations children but not Obamas and his friends.
Many teachers are doing this because the other guy, Romney, is even worse. This is undoubtedly true. Romney is a nightmare. But so is Obama. And so is this scenario. And so is this country. These are the choices of caged animals, not free human beings. And this nightmare will remain and, in fact, grow more so if we do not cease accepting the pathetic and grotesque choices we are given, do not cease accepting the cynical trap that has been set for us do not cease accepting that this is just the way it is.
Education is one issue, to be sure. But to be just as sure, it is emblematic of how the man and the Democratic party now operate. Look at them. Andrew Cuomo is a Democrat. Rahm Emanuel is a Democrat. Bill Gates is a Democrat. So is every member of the hedge fund gang who created and bankroll Democrats For Education Reform. They are also, like our beloved president, insidious union busters.>>>>

(1,068 posts)We cannot let up. Our identity is NOT in complacency, nor is it in acceptance of the capitalistic norm. We need to destroy every aspect of this evil entity, so for now we must remain united in our desire to remove the republican influence from society.
Having for years advocated the legal negation of the republican Party, I have actually stood down from that legal nuclear option, though the intensity of my hatred and disdain for the party and the people in it remain the same. But only when we fully destroy the entity to the point they are as irrelevant as the Whigs or the Reform party, can we then allow ourselves to coalesce in different but spirited parties that all have progressive values as its core.

(96,793 posts)1. We had a very hard time getting teachers to volunteer to work on campaigns. Partly because the stress of teaching is much more intense than it used to be. But also due to their overall dislike of Obama's education policies.
2. Union members here overwhelmingly supported Claire McCaskill over Todd Akin. But support for the president was only about 50%.
Just anecdotal info from one little slice of America. But still strikes me as interesting.

(46,179 posts)Maybe.
Maybe what it means to be a Democrat in 2012 is radically different from what it used to mean. The "New Democrats" are a completely different species, as far as this "old" Democrat can tell.
I know who I am. I know that I don't fit the modern Democratic Party.
