A cellphone video of a Manatee High School teacher berating a student for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance has gone viral on social media.
The original TikTok video has nearly 127,000 views and 9,800 comments, and a copy posted to Facebook has over 4,400 views.
In the video, art teacher Robert Reiber is standing a few feet from the student who is sitting at a desk and yelling, leaning toward the student and using arm gestures to emphasize what hes saying.
The video starts mid-sentence, ... to defend our country and you are gonna sit there on your butt!

School District of Manatee County spokesman Michael Barber said in an emailed statement that the teacher was removed from the school that day and no longer has contact with students.

(15,145 posts)since I affirmed to support and defend the Constitution when I was inducted into military service in the early '70s.
The way I figure it, once you pledge yourself to something, if you truly mean it, you need never do it again. In fact, to do so -- to engage in what I call the "doctrine of continual reaffirmation" -- is to make a mockery of your original vow, as only a meaningless pledge needs constant updating. I affirmed my commitment to the Constitution and this nation as a young man. If I ever change my mind, I'll renounce my pledge. Until then, I'll consider it my word, freely given. Any attempt to make me renew it simply insults me and casts aspersions on my honor.
If you can't be trusted to keep your pledge quietly, what's mumbling it going to mean?

(1,766 posts)A USSC case about this (Williamette) made it clear that students don't have to stand or participate in the Pledge.
Nearly 80 years ago. Even I know that, and I'm an idiot.
I don't know what teachers are taught about their legal/civil rights responsibilities, but one would think this landmark case would be way up that list of Things to Remember.
