Helsinki to host Fields Medal ceremony

Organisers moved the prestigious mathematics prize from St. Petersburg to Helsinki following Russia's attack on Ukraine.

This summer the Fields medal, sometimes called the "Nobel for maths," will be presented in the Finnish capital.

Russian president Vladimir Putin was initially scheduled to open the awards event.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on 5 July at an Aalto University venue in the city's Töölö district.

The Fields Medals are awarded every four years to promising mathematicians under the age of 40. The prestigious prize comes with a 10,000-euro reward.
