The government and education...one family's story...
Short version:
My mother's father came from an uneducated rural farm in SC, and he literally rode a horse to a newly created Land Grant College, where he earned an engineering degree and lived a good live working for the railroad...and sent his only daughter (my mother) to Duke University where she majored in math and science. She taught public school and college math for 35 years.
My father's family were uneducated laborers in GA, and he used an 8 year stint in the military and the GI Bill to first attend a new community college and Duke University medical school (where he met my mother).
My wife's family were uneducated mill workers, and her father died when she was a child. At the time, SS paid survivor benefits through college (that program was stopped in 1981). She used the benefit to attend a community college and now has five college degrees! She is in her 41st year of teaching, and plans to retire in 2020.
Don't forget.
The current state governments and federal government are hell-bent on destroying public education, and programs that support education. As we debate tax bills and wedding cakes, I personally believe we are missing the forest for the trees. Democrats must rally to stop attacks on the opportunity of education. It's not the highest issue in the polls, and doesn't generate much traction with candidates, but the impact of the republican idiots on public education is number one on my list.
