Special Education

As you know from prior posts, I'm a substitute teacher, which requires a certain amount of flexibility and patience.

Today, I'm telling you about my preferred classes. Usually it's whatever is available. But when I can choose, I love the preschool "special education" kids. They have their moments with frustration and meltdowns -- but they pass quickly.

I love watching their determination, their concentration to stuff we take for granted. Putting together a Mr. Potato Head toy. Stacking blocks. Doing art. Getting generous warmth and appreciation from the teachers for following directions. Their smiles. Their little voices chirping "Thank you". As for the latter, when's the last time you really -- I mean really -- let a little expression of gratitude fill you with warmth and humanity?

I'm certified and have taught preschool to 8th grade (even up to high school) as a substitute for a mélange of subjects. These kids remind me why I wanted to teach. They are precious.
