Teachers in Arizona are getting second jobs not because theyre struggling to survive on their low pay, but because they want to enjoy the finer things in life, like boats, according to House Majority Leader John Allen.
Theyre making it out as if anybody who has a second job is struggling. Thats not why many people take a second job, Allen said. They want to increase their lifestyles. They want to improve themselves. They want to pay for a boat. They want a bigger house. They work hard to provide themselves with a better lifestyle. Not everyone who takes a second job does it because theyre borderline poverty.
Allen, a Scottsdale Republican, made the remark as an explanation for the controversial comments he made during a vote Tuesday on a bill to allow more people without formal teacher training to teach at K-12 schools. The bill, SB1042, passed the House and is awaiting Gov. Doug Duceys signature.
During the vote, Allen said the fact that some teachers have to hold a second job to make ends meet doesnt mean lawmakers dont care about them. Instead, it shows teachers are enterprising Americans, like many lawmakers, he said.

Teachers work hard and have an important job. They deserve better pay, not second jobs.

Arizona ranks 40th in starting pay for teachers at just $31,874, compared to New Jersey, the state at the top with $48,631. Huge difference!
Forget the boats you self serving ass, teachers love what they do, but those 2nd jobs are necessary just to afford a place to live, and pay for some of those "finer things in life" like food, water and electricity.
Adding that ALL the lowest paying states are... ready? Republican!

(11,139 posts)That is usually where their arguments head. You see teaching is a thankless profession that should only be done by women that will be provided for by God and the Church. The Bible, er men in power that abhor education for the commoners, love to tout the nuns, and their idealistic vision of how wonderfully cheap school was in the good ole days, before teachers got all uppity.

(14,293 posts)I.T. Administration - not teaching. But I get a pretty objective view of how teachers are treated in this state and how they live.
The AZ GOP views public educators with slightly less contempt than they might hold for an ISIS executioner. Public education is a major budget item that gets in the way of not just cutting taxes for the rich, but eliminating them. And worse, public schools are not allowed to be used to fundamentalist religious indoctrination. Don't get me started on the private charter scam schools in this state - that's a long topic.
No, our teachers are not doing that well and MANY of the best are leaving for states where they are not treated like scum. SB 1042 is desperation to fill positions with people who have no teaching skills and Sen Allen has no clue about what it takes to handle a room full of students at any level.
