UC Berkeley dean in sexual harassment case keeps tenure and avoids charges

Law dean Sujit Choudhry will remain a faculty member ‘in good
standing’ until next year, as critics say the deal shows how
powerful men avoid consequences

The former University of California, Berkeley, law dean whose sexual harassment case sparked national outrage has reached a deal with the school that allows him to maintain tenure, receive research funding and avoid charges.

Although university investigators concluded that Sujit Choudhry had sexually harassed his executive assistant while he was dean, the university is ending its disciplinary process and allowing the professor to remain a faculty member “in good standing” until he “voluntarily” resigns next year, according to newly released documents.

Tyann Sorrell, who went public with her claims last year that Choudhry repeatedly touched her inappropriately when she was his assistant, slammed the settlement terms, saying in a statement: “This deal insults all who suffer harassment at the hands of those with power and privilege.”

The professor’s attorney said the settlement “contains no admission of liability for sexual harassment”.

2. An employment attorney I knew long ago said academia is the last bastion of

sexism, racism, etc., because it is so generally unaccountable for these misbehaviors.

3. Where we work there is a faculty member who is openly gay.

He has a degree from an Ivy League school and is being forced out before his tenure time is even completed. It is more than wrong, but it is real.

Women on campus, especially in male dominated areas like science and engineering struggle every single day.

For what is is worth, our campus is better than the other 3 we have been on.

5. It is sad that this is true in 2017. I think we are again in an era of backlash

as Susan Faludi described the late 80s and early 90s in her book by that name. As certain groups make progress toward being treated fairly, SOME people not in the groups try to push them back.
