'It is with great sadness that we share news that Gail Shandler, director of Lowell School

from 1967–1988, passed away today in Media, PA. Under Gail’s leadership, the school that began as a nursery school in a church basement added a Kindergarten and later 1st–3rd grades. As the school grew, Gail made sure that the Lowell evolved as an institution. She established the Board of Directors and worked with parents to create the Parents Association. And, the Fall Bazaar, Annual Giving, and Annual Auction all came about while Gail was director. One of Gail’s special gifts was translating educational theory into practice when working with young children. Her warmth, intelligence, and creativity were immediately obvious to parents and children alike. The deep sense of community Gail helped create at Lowell continues today. We are grateful for the many lasting ways she helped our school community grow and thrive.

'In their studies of the Civil War, 5th graders learned about DC's Emancipation Day and made freedom art this week. On Tuesday, a re-enactor will visit 5th grade classes to engage with the students portraying a freed slave from the Act for the Release of Certain Persons Held to Service or Labor in the District of Columbia on April 16, 1862.'
