Penn: Oklahoma Man Who Sent Racist Texts Offered Admission

The University of Pennsylvania says a former University of Oklahoma student who sent racist text messages to black Penn freshmen had been offered admission to the Ivy League school in May.

Penn officials say the student — who hasn't been publicly named — decided to enroll at Oklahoma instead.

Because he was offered admission, the student was given access to a private Facebook group for Penn's Class of 2020, which is how he was able to access the students' contact information.

Oklahoma officials say the student who sent the messages referencing lynching and racial slurs through the GroupMe messaging app is no longer enrolled there.

Penn officials are working to prevent similar student access issues in the future, and Penn police continue to work with Oklahoma officials on an FBI investigation.

1. It has been a touch week at OU and other Universities around the country.

Thank goodness President Boren acted rapidly to deal with this issue on OU's campus. Another kid who thought he was an ivy league student who didn't have the grades and blamed minorities for his lack of admission.

I saw a white student shout "go back to Africa" to a black girl on campus yesterday. I followed him into the main library but lost sight of him. I admit I was so stunned I didn't report it. I will the next time. I will pull out my phone and take a picture.

It is terrifying to see all this come out from under the rocks but maybe it is easier to deal with it if it does. IT has always been there, just in hiding. It has no doubt grown since President Obama was elected.

Now that it is out there, those of us who want to stop it, can address it. We can show up to vote, we can rethink how we feel about people who used to work in factories and coal mines who are barely making it. Demonizing the working class is not how to fix this. Not all of the people who voted for Trump are racists, they see no hope for themselves or their families. Desperate people do desperate things.

Both parties must change the status quo, we cannot settle for the way it has always been. Bernie was not the answer, but he is on to something. I love Hillary, but now I see that she was not the answer. My money is on Elizabeth Warren, if she had been running this time, we would be in the White House right now. Maybe in 2020.

I see us having to fight the 50's and 60's again. We cannot let Bannon, Trump, Ailes and the alt right (fascists) take over the country we love. If President Obama has such a high approval rating then these people are not the majority of the country they are just the bullies threatening our democracy.

With all of this said, one thing I have learned is anger and name calling towards those who disagree with us will destroy us all. Am I angry, hell yes, I felt like someone died last week, but I am also trying to listen to people who voted for Trump out of what one called "desperation, our last chance to keep good paying jobs in the country". I know a lot of people think this is about race, I don't think that was the true driving force for the people who put him over the top. I think it was jobs, good jobs, the factory jobs that paid enough that a person could raise their family, put a roof over their heads and food on the table.

Yes, the Klan is alive and thriving, but that was happening before last Tuesday.
