As a parent, having the “birds and bees” discussion with your child can be difficult, especially when it comes to deciding how and when to begin. Early information means providing children with a solid framework ... Even in the most progressive arenas, however, parental backlash seems to be inevitable.

Out here in Minneapolis, the media is in an uproar over a local small private school of roughly two dozen students, where, as part of an on-going sex ed curriculum, a school leader took the middle and grade school members on a trip to a nearby sex shop. The shop itself is a self-proclaimed “progressive” store, focusing on sex positive toys and books, open discussions on sexuality and gender, reproductive health assistance and a variety of sex and sexual health practices. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the store put away anything that might be deemed “pornographic” but allowed sex toys to remain out, causing at least one parent to be up at arms.

Due to the outcry, a city inspector has now reprimanded the sex-store ...

Teens are having sex at a younger and younger age, and they need to know how to prevent pregnancy, how to say no when they aren’t ready, and how to care for themselves when they do engage in sexual activities, in a way far beyond just contraception. They also are discovering more about their own sexuality — how they identify, who they are attracted to and how to cope with those feelings. ...

1. I think taking kids to a sex shop is a bit extreme.

Maybe 17 and 18 year old seniors but probably not a good idea.

My sex ed was pretty comprehensive. We learned about condoms, we learned about birth control, we learned abouy pregnancy watched a video of child birth, we learned about stds and saw graphic photos this was high school probably to late for some.

This was the early 90s before the abstinence only nonsense.
